The 2011 Riesling Smaragd Vom Stein opens with the ripe charm and winning self-confidence of a warm vintage. Super clear, with ultra-ripe (not overripe though!) and concentrated fruit aromas on the nose along with floral and herbal flavors, there is no cool soul so far, since the baby-fruit takes it all. Full-bodied, rich and powerful on the palate, this is a very juicy but also pure and complex wine still full of finesse, fresh and very, very long. It is a mighty, firmly structured, but nevertheless, refreshing and very mineral as well as elegant Riesling full of energy and vibrancy. The finish is impressively long and filled with tension and the aging potential should be terrific. It's a great drinking experience today, and I suppose it will always be in the next 20 or 25 years.

A lovely, slightly funky, smokiness on the nose comes hand in hand with baked and bruised apple notes. Crushed notes of yarrow add an herbal frisson. The palate adds a creamy but focused ripeness, well tempered by integrated freshness. It is the texture here that captivates, alongside the complex flavors. This shows that a few years of bottle age are nothing on a good, light-footed Riesling. Enjoy this library release now through 2030.

This almost literally smells of history; the dried-apple, pear and candied-lemon aromas are very much of the kind I imagine a young riesling from the 19th century would have had. Six years maturation in wooden barrel have certainly made this medium-bodied wine more imposing, but also more subtle. From biodynamically grown grapes. Demeter certified. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Bottled in April 2017 after seven years of aging in a large oak cask, the 2010 Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Federspiel is intense and yeasty on the lemon-fresh and deep nose. Intense and well-structured, this is a lighter and finessed but persistently salty and grippy Veltliner with nice bitterness and salinity in the finish. A very subtle Wachauer. Tasted September 2018.

Earthy, juicy ripeness of Russet pear is evoked vividly on the nose, while white pepper and ground stone shimmer in the background. The palate is juicy at first, but soon the salty, yeasty, almost cheesy core spreads its savory magic, not without adding vivid apple notes. A very complex and deeply satisfying wine. The finish belongs to zesty, clean lemon.

An April 2017 bottling of the same cuvée whose first half was bottled in the summer of 2011 and released immediately thereafter, this represents in effect a semi-Vinothek offering, yet at a scarcely higher price than was asked for the initial bottling. There were initially 2,000 liters, so this wine was racked once, into a 1,000-liter cask. It features the same 11.5% alcohol and concomitant sense of buoyancy as did the corresponding 2016, and as have so many other Nikolaihof Federspiele. A delightfully intriguing nose offers moss, snuffed candle wick, wet stone, lemon zest and fresh green bean. There is a subtly creamy feel on the palate, which also offers a reprise of the mature elements found on the nose. Piquant artichoke and hazelnut, richly nutty raw spinach and iodine-tinged shrimp shell add to the complex savor of a juicily sustained finish.
